A collection of material to take you back in time on the local line

Sentimental Journey - coming soon

How would you like to take a trip on the famous old Axminster to Lyme Regis Line? Ride on the loco as it weaves its way along the old route, enjoying the glorious scenery? Pause at Combpyne Station and gasp as the train negotiates the incredible Cannington Viaduct before finally terminating high above the sea at Lyme Regis. The line has, of course, long since closed but we have built on a beautiful simulation made by Golden Age Developments, adding a commentary with memories from our own former fireman on the line, Terry Guppy.

Axminster Change for Lyme Regis

The incredible story of how a trio of Victorian Adams tank  locomotives came to the rescue of the Axminster to Lyme Regis line after other more modern contenders for the job all failed to cope with its steep twists and turns. This footage was part of the much loved ‘Railway Roundabout’ BBC series for children between 1958 and 1960. It includes glorious footage of Lyme Billy 30583 shunting in Axminster and then climbing away towards Combypyne Station and finally arriving in Lyme Regis. Simply stunning!

Do You Know the Legend of Lyme Billy?

A short programme to explain what we are doing, and the big challenge that we face. For the Love of a Railway was born from the romantic legend of three Victorian locos that made the Axminster to Lyme Regis Line their own for more than 50 years and against all the odds. Behind our work stands a wider mission to create a visitor centre that helps to give both community and visitors reason to spend time in Axminster. But our survival is by no means guaranteed.
