The Axminster to Lyme Regis Railway Schools Pack
The former Axminster to Lyme Regis Railway closed in 1965, but it still offers some significant learning opportunities across a wide area of the national curriculum. The story of the magical little railway on the Devon / Dorset border is particularly relevant to Key Stage 2 studies in history and geography because it involves an era of significant local change. For schools in the area, it offers teachers a primary source of evidence that is so often hard to find.
This project is supported by the East Devon National Landscape.

HISTORY & TRANSPORT
Pupils explore how the railway transformed daily life locally and further afield, boosting tourism and creating employment. They examine continuity and change over time while making personal connections with the past.
GEOGRAPHY
Children develop practical map skills, including scale, direction, landmarks and contour lines. They learn how physical geography shapes human decisions and identify key features of rural and coastal landscapes.
ART & CREATIVITY
Through observational drawing, pupils sharpen their attention to detail and visual awareness. They also explore graphic communication by designing persuasive posters and visual materials.
ENGLISH & DRAMA
The project enriches descriptive vocabulary and encourages historical imagination. Pupils structure narratives and diary writing, and build confidence through role play and performance.
ECONOMY & TOURISM
Children discover how transport links support local businesses and economic growth. They also explore the development of seaside tourism and why travel became possible for more families.
