Perch Bird with a colleague
Percy Bird was an engine driver who worked on the Axminster to Lyme Regis Line between 1938 and his retirement in 1948, He was also a gifted photographer in the days of wooden cameras, leather-backed lenses and glass slides. He had been a driver on the main line between Exeter and Waterloo before coming to Lyme Regis to work after he married. A man of many parts, he also had a passion for motorcycles, astronomy and music.

After Percy died in 1978 his family discovered an estimated 1,200 glass slides in the roof of his garage. His grandson, Rob Wheeler, then put his digital imaging skills to work to extract the images from delicate glass slides and enhanced them.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Percy’s family for allowing us the privilege of exhibiting these superb photos from his days as a driver

This exhibition has been made possible thanks to support from the Devon & Cornwall Rail Partnership.

Our aim is to offer as much as possible of what we do for free, especially to the young families and retired people who make up an important slice of our audience. If you do feel able to make a modest donation it would be much appreciated and would help us to cover our operating costs while also extending what we do. Thank you.
